What It’s Like Around Here

Most people think of the beach when they think of the LA area, and there's certainly fun to be had there, but we love the hills and mountains that wrap around the area even more. Even just within Glendale's city limits is a 2,500 foot mountain, there are parks with many acres to wander, and within a short drive are some serious hikes.

family-friendly outdoor recreational activities

Glendale, California

  • A hike to the summit of Glenale's 2,500-foot Mt. Thom is a challenge given the steep trails, but the adventurous family (with bigger kids) can handle it. Also you can walk up the still steep but more forgiving fire road, too. Start in Brand Park for the more rigorous hike.

  • Just south of the city, the massive Griffith Park has miles and miles of hiking trails and on clear days has great views for miles. Its home of iconic spots like the Griffith Park Observatory and you could truly spend all day hiking there and not see the entirety of the park.

  • Descanso Gardens is a short drive north of the city and has several miles of paved pathways, gorgeous flowers and trees in all seasons. Its home to ponds, and plenty of wildlife, not to mention a great natural hike up to the Boddy House and Sturt Hagga Galleries for revolving art exhibits rooted in nature -- a membership is worth it.

Top Tips for Family Fun Outdoors

The mornings are cool enough for outdoor fun in almost any season, so make the most of them and start early. Bring plenty of water and snacks wherever you go, and plan for extra time added to outings based on infamous LA traffic. And do check air quality info before planning a long outdoor day.
