  • WOS trail at Summit Park Trailhead – This 10 trail system (with 3.5 miles of hiking only trails) is amazing on hot summer days when exposed trails would be too hot for the littles. The pine forests and north facing shade provide cool hiking all day with lots of great views, greenery, and wildflowers. This is a great spot for winter touring and snowshoeing too. Parking is limited and toward the top of steep windy section of road so avoid this spot on snowy winter days if you don’t have 4WD and good tires.

  • The Round Valley trail system has several miles of trails and is located close to town for easy access. On hot sunny days, there isn’t a lot of places to find shade, so choose cooler morning hours to hit these trails, or escape with the kids to the nearby playgrounds to find a little shade. Trailside park has a great playground and parents can take turns taking mountain biking laps at in the more advanced mountain biking park while kids lap the pump tracks.

  • At 10,300 feet and right along the Mirror lake Highway, Butterfly Lake provides easy access and cooler temps during the heat of summer. There is great hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing and SUP or a lakeside picnic. The drive is long enough for kiddos to catch a nap and a quick stop at Provo Falls is well worth the short hike on the way back to town.

  • Stewart Falls – This is a well trodden and great hike to the two tier falls through aspens and meadows under the shadow of Mount Timpanogos. Best for kids kids 4+ years old or with proven trail stamina as this will take a few hours. The trail ends up on a small creek below the falls where the kids can cool off their feet and test their tolerance for cold water. I wouldn’t recommend hiking up to the falls, it’s pretty treacherous. If you go on Sunday, consider catching brunch at Sundance Resort.

Top Tips for Family Fun Outdoors

Watch the weather, especially on the Wasatch Back. The sun can be hot, but wind and weather can come in fast and temps can drop fast. It's high mountain desert here, stay hydrated and consider supplementing with electrolytes.
